Let's face it, cancer is expensive and being out of work while battling it is even more expensive.

I recently met a friend of a friend that is battling the dreaded hodge. A few years back I gathered financial assistance details only to find out now that some of the info is out of date now. If you know of a helpful resource page, please let me know, of just leave comments of good financial assistance resources :)

Deadline Approaching - LLS Financial Aid

The deadline to apply for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's financial aid is Tuesday, June 30th. If you're going thru treatment for a blood cancer or did this year, or had up to $500 of cancer-related costs (co-pays, prescriptions, etc.) you should definitely apply for this ASAP. To fill out the form, click here. They also have a Co-Pay Assistance Program which you can read about here (warning, it's a bit more confusing). I highly recommend calling LLS (800) 955-4572 with any questions you might have, since it can be overwhelming, and because the deadline is only 2 weeks away.

Here's the kicker about the financial aid program that I learned about today, it's been $500 for a few years but due to the economy the reimbursement is being cut down to $150 for next year (their fiscal year starts July 1, 2009). My suggestion to you folks is to submit for both years, if possible. Get all your paperwork in for the June 30 deadline for the $500 reimbursement, and then get started on filling out the paperwork for the 'new fiscal year' shortly after to guarantee you get the $150 incase they run out.

Cancer Resources: Financial Aid, Co-Pay Assistance

One thing I'm thankful for was having great health care when I was diagnosed with cancer. Some people aren't so lucky... or they have health insurance, but can't work and bills pile up and it just adds to the already mounting stress. Another thing most of us hodgers know, a lot of folks get diagnosed this time of year. I'm not sure why, but it's very common... Personally, I was diagnosed a few days from now, two years ago (December 21, 2006).

With all of that in mind, I wanted to compile some resources for people to find support when the going gets tough... now please bear in mind, this isn't everything and any additions are welcomed and will updated to this post.

If you're a young adult, you should check out I'm Too Young For This, they have several options for financial aid on their Website. To learn more, click here.

Please be sure to check with your social worker. And if you don't have one, ask your oncologist or your nurse for one. They can help you learn more about local resources. Some hospitals might have charities designated especially for their patients. Also, you never know if there are high school or college students willing to volunteer and help your family, or even your local church members.

The more you ask, the more you know.
